In the base game it’s just not good. It’s improved a little when you can ride rhinos, but it’s still never the same DPS by default. I use a combo of melee and archery, and archery can be very useful and effective, even if I'm not heavily invested in it. I do have access to the better legendary bows, though.I recommend Set arrows, the poison works better than anything bow could do. Level required: about 20 for Set arrows. Could propably work with other bosses, if you can find convenient place they can't get to to exploit. So far i've seen the giant crocodile on the river, a huge scorpion in the desert and a scary af demon on top of that one tower.

I think Obsidian has a very slightly better AP than Dragonbone but I don't think it's worth going out of your way for. Hollowbone Arrows would be better in a lot of cases because of the insane AP but they're a bit of a pain to get in mass quantities. The Reach of the Red Mother is the best bow around and for PVP the Hollowbone Arrows are the strongest for their incredibly high penetration. I haven't explored javelins too much but the Riptide from the Unnamed City gives you underwater breathing and the dragonbone javelins are pretty strong for easy to craft, disposable weapons.

I haven't looked at them since 3.0 so that may be different now. If they are still made from basic iron they are the best for the cost.
